My Story

Mustang Mare: Leather Goods with Soul

At Mustang Mare, every handcrafted piece carries more than durability—it carries a story. For owner and maker Kim Leonard, that story began in the hills of the San Francisco Bay Area, where a young girl found freedom on horseback.

“I always loved riding my horse up in the hills behind the boarding stable. As I rode, I would imagine what it was like for ancient peoples to live close to nature and not know the technologies of today.”

Those moments of quiet wonder, connection to the earth, and respect for both indigenous traditions and the grit of the settlers planted the seeds for Mustang Mare’s philosophy. Horses, humans, nature, and tradition—all of these threads are woven into the brand’s logo and live within every creation that comes out of Kim’s leather shop.

From Hills to Handcraft

Over the years, Kim’s path led her out of the suburbs and into the wide-open spaces of rural Sacramento County—and now, to a new property in rural Nevada, where life slows down and the bond with nature grows stronger.

Her lifelong love of horses naturally evolved into an appreciation for the tack and leather goods that accompany them. But it wasn’t until she met her husband—an accomplished chap maker and traditional cowboy gear craftsman with more than 20 years of experience—that leather became more than something she admired. It became her creative medium.

“Spending time in the shop opened the doors of creativity for me. The more I worked with leather, the more I realized my soul is fed by allowing these designs to come to life.”

Leatherwork as a Calling

For Kim, Mustang Mare is more than a business—it’s a calling. Each piece she crafts feels like it comes from somewhere beyond herself.

“They’re not really me—they’re coming from somewhere else out there in the universe, and I allow them to come into being.”

This philosophy infuses Mustang Mare creations with something rare: functionality, durability, and soul. These aren’t just accessories. They’re wearable stories—rooted in history, shaped by tradition, and inspired by the land.

Looking Ahead

As Kim approaches retirement from her career as a federal civil engineer, her sights are set fully on the leather shop. Mustang Mare is where her heart beats strongest, and it’s where her creativity flourishes.

“I sincerely appreciate the people who have found my designs and can feel the soulful infusion into my work.”
